• Nowadays, people are conditioned by principals, patterns and models
of communication which form their intellectual existence.
Technologies of the modern society do not develop an individual for the
purpose of his goals, but those technologies become products themselves.
Human body turns to be a product for purposes of advertising, politics,
fashion, science and sex.
On the other hand, spirituality, personal identity of an individual and
the way he is represented in media are controversial notions while entertainment
industry opens a space for experiments of the cultural and ethical imperialism.
Works of the Belgrade artist Vladislav Scepanovic are based on the sociological
theory of inevitable dissociation and contrast between the two civilizations.
Differences between the “Eastern” and “Western”
world in the sphere of culture and spirit, in their way of living and thinking
the artist comprehended as a primary value of the human civilization.
The political, ethical and cultural imperialism Scepanovic understands as
disturbing natural and autochthonous system of values of an individual.
Accordingly, his complete art is a philosophical attitude and any of his
works sends an explicit information.
Being faithful to his painting expression – Radical Realism and POP
ART, he speaks the truth about the present global political situation and
methods of the modern imperialism through the cultural and spiritual method
to enslave the weak.
Paintings from the cycle “Happy Family” are notions on fake
happiness and harmony of the West European and American men, offered to
them as an existential condition.
For the cycle of paintings “Eastern Girls and Western Movies (Dreams)”,
as well as for most of his works, the artist uses the basic and already
known information (poster as a media for public announcing of events, mostly
in the Hollywood movie industry) and adds to it (painted collage) porno
starlets of the Eastern world, creating in that way truthful vision of deformed
values of both industries (movies and porno industry), hopes, dreams and
self deception of an individual who is unable to create values himself,
but becomes a consumer and a link in the chain of the consumers society.

EASTERN GIRLS AND
WESTERN DREAMS
Work in the technique of print
and oil on large canvas
The basic idea which inspired me while creating my recent works is continuity
in experiencing dreams and postulates which are offered as a hybrid or a
final product.
We are expected to choose some of them and live them.
Regularly, the offer is wanted and right, while the freedom is guaranteed
if we move within the given limits.
Who are the limits determined by? Are they determined by the profit? Those
are only some of the questions initiated in the cycle of works Eastern Girls
and Western Dreams.
Nowadays, the problem of identity
and searching for the sense of existence is more notable than ever. Consumers
society is entering in its last phase and is to be replaced with something
equally superficial and attractive; the only problem is that any change
will last shorter than the previous one for the time unmercifully runs to
its end. It is similar to the situation by the end of the last century when
the left ideas were at the same time “progressive” and meant
the break with tradition and, unfortunately, brought out communist dictatorships
and patterns of individuals behavior in the society. It also formed an individual
in the way expected of such a society. In the same time, on the West, specially
in America, a new offer was born, spread its influence and had more fatal
consequences than anything ever before. It was the “dreams factory”
– HOLLYWOOD.
I will not ponder upon deeper meaning of the “dreams factory”
for this is obvious in my works. I will mention only few examples which,
through the cultural imperialism, provoked appearance of ethical and, today
more present than ever, the military imperialism. It inevitably had to happen
and it happened indeed in the “dreams factory”.
The whole system of values is based on the unreal and beautified outer look,
beauty of the nation and luxury, although it does not correspond to the
reality of the world it comes from, it influences the whole world and promotes
materialism, conformism and instant spirituality.
We often witness campaigns against white slavery traffic, whose victims
are East European girls who, led by the things I have already mentioned,
embrace the reality that stands as a core of the so called splendor of easily
earned money, luxurious life, expensive cars, sandy beaches and “all
inclusive” hotels. All those persons rushing to achieve it are unfortunately
“flash and blood” of that temple.
“Dreams factory” influences mentality of unconscious beings
who willingly accept to be in the function of values which do not contain
neither love nor enthusiasm but only profit and after all betrayed dreams.
