Biography

Robert Hunter

Artist/Work Information:

I have been a commercial and fine artist for nearly 20 years. My work is illustrative, generally depicting Pacific Island life, stories and legends. I work mostly in acrylics and oils, but also sculpt and carve.

Maybe I should introduce myself before I go on (and on and on). Not that you care... but who knows? Your life might be at such a pathetic state that you may actually care. So... here goes...

My name is Robert Hunter. I live in the Northern Mariana Islands, The United States "unknown commonwealth". It is a chain of 16 islands 120 miles north of Guam (in case you don't know where Guam is... I am not going to trudge through some long explanation. It is quite likely that the only time you've heard of "Guam" is in references to stealth bombers on the FOXNazi network or as a question on Jeopardy. But then if you are still reading this... it is quite likely you did not hear the "Guam" question on Jeopardy.) Anyhoo... it is a stereotypical paradise. White sand beaches, coconut palms, aqua lagoons, warm all year, etc. etc. It does, however, take a certain kind of personality to live here. If you are anal retentive, can't do without a Walmart, insist on being on-time, appreciate potable tapwater, are a "go-getter" who thinks they can change the world, beleive that America is a model for the world, can't stand to sweat, burn easily, or your mission is to enlighten and educate communities you feel are in need... THIS PLACE IS NOT FOR YOU. Take a vacation here... moving here might not be the wisest of ideas. But I digress... I am talking about me right?

I was born on Staten Island, New York. Dad was in the Coast Guard and Mom was from Yap/Palau in Micronesia. We moved around a bit. From NY to Arizona to Hawaii to Saipan to Arizona to Saipan to Arizona to Virginia to Saipan to Arizona to Florida (whew) and now I am back to Saipan again. I don't really have a home... this is my home I guess. It's the only place I know. As I am not an indigenous resident of the NMI, I can't own land... so it is truly odd that I would consider this home... but it is.

I am an artist first and foremost. A painter, carver, sculptor, designer, etc. etc. Wanting not to be a "starving artist", after some stints as a full time hired commercial artist and several year's as a freelance artist... I began a career in arts education and arts administration. Basically, I get to do my art... and still get a check every two weeks. Yipeee!!! And get to help other artists out and do what I can to promote the arts as well.

I have an eclectic personality... I am an ultraliberal (yes, if I am not physically hurting you by something I am doing... leave me the F*$K alone), I am an athiest (although I believe we may possibly be the bedbugs in a greater beings bedmatress), I love to watch people (especially ones with low braincell counts), I beleive in evolution and am waiting with baited breathe an explanation for FOSSIL EVIDENCE from the myriad of church leaders, I detest bloated egos, personal agendas, do-nothings, loud mouths, the pretentious, attention-hogs, credit-stealers, among other skewed personality traits, I am easy-going, laid back and believe that folks are either good or bad, dark or light and that, while a good person might slip once in awhile or a bad person may do a fair deed on occasion... there is no gray in this area.

Lastly, I love to travel. My only goal before life (for me) ends is to see as much of the world as I can. So far, I've been lucky enough to have travelled to Australia a few times, New Zealand, Fiji, Cook Islands, Samoa, Nauru, New Caledonia a few times, Japan a few times, Korea, Thailand, Germany, Spain, Mexico, Philippines, Palau, Yap, Phonpei, Chuuk, Johnston Island, Marshalls, and Indonesia about 8 times.

So... this is me... egads (or gadzooks if you prefer).
