Biography

Devon Cameron

Devon Cameron has been creating original artwork for over a decade working with wood, ceramics and glass. Out of all her art media, she enjoys working with gourds the most. Each gourd comes to her with a personality, and it is always a creative endeavor to enhance upon mother nature’s work. After deciding the personality of each gourd Devon sketches a design, embellishes it with polymer clay, and brings it to life with acrylic leather paints, dyes and wood stains. Her gourd work has been published in several gourd magazines and will be featured in The American Gourd Association’s magazine The Gourd.

Gourds are related to melon, squash, and pumpkin, all relatives of the cucumber family. The hard-shelled variety was recognized early in human history as one of nature’s gifts. Egyptian pharaohs were entombed with grain-filled gourds, Africans brewed beer in large gourds, and, in China, people used gourds as hats!

It can take as long as 180 days for a hard-shelled gourd to mature on vines that wander up to 100 feet in length. It must be cured for six months, usually left on the vine over the winter months. During this drying period, mold develops on the gourd’s skin. Even after a scrubbing with bleach water, the mold’s delicate tracings often remain to add beauty and interest to a finished Gourdament.
